Species: Favia sp.
Coral Type: LPS Coral (Large Polyp Stony)
Physical Description: Watermelon Favia is a classic and highly desirable LPS coral known for its vivid bi-color “fruit-like” patterning. Each polyp typically features a deep red to maroon center resembling ripe watermelon flesh, surrounded by a bright green outer rim that forms a sharp, glowing contrast. The raised corallites give the colony a textured, brain-like appearance, with each polyp clearly defined and often slightly domed. Under actinic and blue-spectrum lighting, the green rims fluoresce intensely while the red centers deepen in tone, creating a striking, high-contrast display reminiscent of its namesake fruit. As the colony grows, it encrusts and forms tightly packed clusters of vividly colored polyps.
Coral Type: LPS (Large Polyp Stony)
Lighting: Low to Moderate (approximately 50–150 PAR)
Flow Rate: Low to Moderate with gentle, indirect flow to promote full polyp expansion and prevent tissue recession
Food Requirements: Primarily photosynthetic but benefits from regular target feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, chopped seafood, or specialized LPS coral diets.
Aggression: Moderate; capable of extending sweeper tentacles at night and should be given adequate spacing from nearby corals.
Substrate: Best placed on stable rockwork or lower reef structures where it can safely encrust and expand without contact with more delicate species.
We maintain a rigorous, veterinarian-approved quarantine program that includes proactive treatments, careful observation, and daily monitoring to ensure the highest standards of coral and invertebrate health. Our biosecurity practices reduce the risk of any cross-contamination between systems, meaning all our livestock are ready for your display tanks.
