ECC Confused Rainbow Montipora

Species: Montipora sp.

Coral Type: SPS Coral (Small Polyp Stony)

Physical Description: Confused Rainbow Montipora is a highly colorful and unpredictable SPS coral known for its chaotic, multi-hued growth pattern. It typically features an encrusting to plating structure with a base that can range from bright pink to orange or golden yellow, overlaid with irregular patches of green, teal, purple, and red that appear to shift and “confuse” the overall pattern. The tightly packed polyps create a fine, velvety texture across the surface, enhancing the coral’s complex coloration. Under actinic and blue-spectrum lighting, the fluorescent pigments intensify dramatically, causing different sections of the colony to glow independently and creating a constantly evolving rainbow effect. As it grows, it encrusts and may form layered plating edges that further amplify its multi-tonal appearance.

Coral Type: SPS (Small Polyp Stony)
Lighting: High (approximately 200–350 PAR)
Flow Rate: Moderate to High with strong, random turbulent flow to promote healthy growth and prevent detritus buildup
Food Requirements: Primarily photosynthetic but benefits from occasional dosing of amino acids, trace elements, and fine SPS coral foods
Aggression: Low; non-aggressive but encrusting growth can overtake nearby rock surfaces over time
Substrate: Best placed on stable live rock in high-light, high-flow zones where it can safely encrust and expand

We maintain a rigorous, veterinarian-approved quarantine program that includes proactive treatments, careful observation, and daily monitoring to ensure the highest standards of coral and invertebrate health. Our biosecurity practices reduce the risk of any cross-contamination between systems, meaning all our livestock are ready for your display tanks.
