Derasa Clam – Tridacna derasa
The Derasa Clam is a large, elegant tridacnid clam known for its smooth shell and beautifully patterned mantle featuring golden, cream, and iridescent blue highlights. Reaching 12–20 inches at full size, it is one of the hardier giant clam species, making it suitable for both intermediate and experienced reef keepers. Derasa Clams are generally peaceful and remain stationary once settled, adding a stunning, natural focal point to reef displays. Their vibrant mantle coloration intensifies under strong reef lighting.
A minimum tank size of 75 gallons is recommended, as this species grows rapidly and requires stable, mature reef conditions. Add Derasa Clams after the tank is fully cycled and parameters are reliably stable, especially calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium. Provide strong lighting and a flat rock or sandbed placement where the clam can attach securely.
Although primarily photosynthetic, the Derasa Clam benefits from supplemental feedings of very small planktonic foods. Offer PE Cyclopods or Hikari Rotifers to support healthy growth, especially in younger or smaller specimens.
