Brown Scopas Tang - Zebrasoma scopas

The Brown Scopas Tang is a hardy and active surgeonfish recognized for its sleek oval body, extended finnage, and earthy brown coloration that can display subtle iridescent highlights under reef lighting. This species grows to approximately 8 inches in adulthood and is constantly on the move grazing algae throughout the aquarium. While generally peaceful toward unrelated fish, the Brown Scopas Tang may become territorial with other tangs or similarly shaped herbivores. Its durability and strong algae-grazing behavior make it a popular choice for larger marine aquariums.

The Brown Scopas Tang thrives in established reef and fish-only systems with abundant live rock and open swimming space. A minimum tank size of 125 gallons is recommended to accommodate its active swimming habits and adult size. This species is best added after more peaceful fish are established but before introducing highly territorial tangs.

As an herbivore, the Brown Scopas Tang requires a diet rich in marine algae and vegetable matter to maintain proper health and immune function. Offer Julian Sprung’s Sea Veggies daily using an algae clip along with Hikari Spirulina Brine Shrimp, Ocean Nutrition Formula 2 Frozen Food and Pellets, San Francisco Bay Brand Spirulina Mysis Shrimp, and New Life Spectrum Algae Pellets for optimal nutrition and coloration.
