Blue Eyed Kole Tang – (Ctenochaetus binotatus)

The Blue Eyed Kole Tang features a rich brown to maroon body highlighted by fine horizontal striping and a distinctive electric-blue ring around the eye that gives this fish its name. Its constantly grazing behavior and smooth, methodical swimming pattern make it both functional and visually appealing in a reef aquarium. Growing to around 7 inches, this species is known for its relatively peaceful temperament compared to other tangs, though it may show mild territorial behavior toward similar species.

This species does best in a well-established aquarium with ample live rock for natural grazing and stable water conditions. Provide plenty of swimming space along with rockwork surfaces to support its constant feeding habits. A minimum tank size of 75–90 gallons is recommended, and it should be added after the tank has matured to ensure sufficient natural algae growth.

Diet and Feeding:

Blue Eyed Kole Tangs are excellent herbivores and detritus grazers, constantly picking at film algae and organic matter. Offer a varied diet including high-quality prepared foods from San Francisco, Hikari, PE, TDO, and New Life Spectrum, along with daily supplementation of algae sheets such as Julian Sprung’s Sea Veggies to support optimal health and coloration.
