Astraea Snail – Astraea tecta
The Astraea Turbo Snail features a distinct pyramid-shaped shell highlighted by olive-green hues, with some individuals displaying star-like projections that give them a unique, sculpted appearance. This hardy herbivore is an active grazer, spending its time removing nuisance algae from live rock and glass surfaces. Known for its ability to consume entire hair algae structures, the Astraea Snail offers both beauty and practical algae control for the reef keeper. While not an agile climber, it is fascinating to watch as it navigates rocky surfaces. Hobbyists should monitor it periodically, as the species struggles to right itself if overturned.
Astraea Turbo Snails thrive in well-established marine aquariums with abundant live rock, natural algae growth, and crevices for hiding. Provide ample space for roaming and ensure stable water chemistry, as this species is sensitive to parameter swings. Add Astraea Snails after your tank matures and develops sufficient algae, typically a few months after initial cycling. Avoid sudden changes in water conditions, especially when introducing them to the aquarium.
These snails primarily consume biofilm algae. If natural algae becomes scarce, supplement their diet with New Life Spectrum algae pellets, Hikari frozen spirulina brine shrimp, and Julian Sprung's Sea Veggies.
